Baby Boomers and the Gray Divorce: Steps to Take After the Divorce

April 14, 2017

The divorce rate among baby boomers has steadily increased during the last decade. The increase in baby boomers getting divorced, commonly referred to as “gray divorce,” has created unique challenges for older couples going through divorce in Connecticut and throughout the U.S.

In 1990, roughly one in 10 couples getting divorced were over the age of 50 in the U.S. Now, that statistic has increased with one in four couples getting divorced in 2009 being over the age of 50. With more baby boomer couples ending their marriages, many of these spouses find themselves facing challenges they never thought they would have to deal with again at their age.

Studies have shown that baby boomer couples going through divorce struggle with many emotional and financial issues. Roughly 49 percent of baby boomers getting divorced say they feel very stressed and are nervous about living alone again. Many baby boomers also report having fears over their financial future, not finding love again, being depressed or are worried about not seeing their children as often as they used to.

While these issues can be difficult to address and deal with, there are steps baby boomers can take to help ease the stress and pain of their divorce and move on to a happier, more hopeful life after divorce. Baby boomers should take the following tips into consideration to help ease the burden of divorce:

  • Find self-compassion: try to forgive yourself for mistakes made in the past, especially regarding your marriage. It is important to know that there are several factors that contribute to a couple getting divorce and to not dwell on issues in the past.
  • Create a support system: it is important to try to establish a support group to help you cope with the divorce and create a new, healthy lifestyle.
  • Use technology: technology can be very helpful during and after a divorce because it allows you to connect with old and new friends, and can be a part of creating a support system.
  • Attend family and social events: maintain friendships with family and close friends to help create that support group you will benefit from having now and in the future.

Divorce at any age can be difficult, especially for couples who have been together for many years or decades. That is why baby boomers should try to understand how divorce will impact the rest of the life and take steps to make sure they are creating a happy, stress-free future for themselves once the divorce is finalized.
