I grew up in the Berkshires surrounded by a family of dedicated teachers. In middle school, my mom, dad, aunt, and uncle were all teachers in the building. Talking myself out of trouble before one of my family members found out honed my negotiating skills and laid the early groundwork for my career as a lawyer. Later on, as a three-sport athlete in high school, and as a college soccer player, I learned firsthand that success was impossible without hard work and meticulous preparation. But I also learned that individual hard work and preparation were never enough. Working with, and being able to rely on, your teammates was the key. At Broder Orland Murray & DeMattie LLC, I’m surrounded by some of the best Family Law attorneys in Connecticut.
Before coming to this firm, I worked for almost 15 years in civil litigation, focusing on professional liability defense. While representing doctors and lawyers might seem significantly different from Family Law, they both require close attention to detail, strong litigation skills, and the empathy necessary to help clients manage a difficult, and often emotional, process. As a civil litigator, I successfully tried a number of cases to verdict. But like Family Law, most cases were resolved by way of settlement. Perhaps the most important thing I learned was how to leverage the best possible settlement based on the specific facts of the case.
I earned my undergraduate degree in English Literature at Hamilton College. I then attended Western New England College School of Law on a full academic scholarship. While in law school, I was one of two students selected to be a member of the school’s moot court team. The advocacy skills I developed during moot court have been invaluable to my career as a litigator. I was also awarded the CALI award (given to the highest scoring student in each law school class) in Family Law and eventually graduated with honors. During law school, I interned as a law clerk for a Federal Court judge, and after graduation, I worked as a judicial law clerk for Connecticut Superior Court judges. As a law clerk, I helped draft opinions on a variety of complex civil and family issues. I also got to work closely with a number of Connecticut trial court judges.
In 2009, I joined a prominent civil litigation firm in Fairfield County where I represented lawyers, health care providers, and other professionals. During that time, I tried a number of cases to verdict and represented clients before the Connecticut Appellate and Supreme Courts. I became a partner at the firm in 2020. I am admitted to practice in Connecticut and am a member of the Fairfield County and Connecticut Bar Associations.
I now live in Stamford with my wife, Ali, and my daughter, Winnie. When I’m not working, I enjoy golf, pickleball, and playing basketball with my daughter.
Fun Fact: Growing up in Massachusetts, but on the border of New York, I am a lifelong fan of both the New York Yankees and the Boston Celtics
