Determining the Length of Alimony in Connecticut Divorce Cases

In determining the amount of alimony that a spouse has to pay in a Connecticut divorce case, the court will consider a number of factors such as the length of the marriage, the ages of the parties, each party’s health, occupation, employability, the amount and sources of income, and the parties’ needs. The State of Connecticut does not have a specific alimony formula or calculator as it does for child support.

Additionally, the court does not have to specifically enumerate which of the factors I just mentioned when it considers the actual amount of alimony. Often, in a decision, a judge will state that he or she considered all of the factors in determining the amount that should be paid.
